How to choose

Start with the room and the audience, not the equipment list. The size of the space and the type of event decide what the system needs to do.

Beginner

If you are setting up your first PA, a pair of powered speakers with a small mixer, or an all-in-one portable system, covers most small events. Behringer and Wharfedale powered speakers are straightforward to use, and a Shure or Sennheiser dynamic vocal microphone is a reliable start. Place the speakers in front of the microphones to avoid feedback, and use proper XLR cables.

Intermediate

If you do regular gigs or run a church or school system, add stage monitors so performers can hear themselves, and a mixer with enough monitor sends. Consider a subwoofer for music with a lot of bass. Wireless microphones from Shure, Sennheiser and Samson give presenters freedom to move. Protect the system with good cases and cables, and learn to ring out the monitors before a show.

Expert

For larger venues and installations, design the system for even coverage, clarity and reliability. Use speaker processing and correct placement, choose microphones for each source, and consider a digital mixer with a stage box to simplify cabling. For installed sound, 100V line systems from Hybrid and DSPPA run many speakers over long distances with zone control. Plan for redundancy on critical events and document the setup so any operator can run it.

About our live sound department

A live sound system is a chain. Microphones pick up the performance, a mixer balances it, amplifiers and speakers deliver it to the audience, and monitors let the performers hear themselves. The weakest link sets the quality of the whole system, so it pays to plan the chain together.

The department also covers installed sound for schools, shops and churches, including 100V line amplifiers and ceiling speakers that play background music and announcements across many rooms.
