How to choose

Choose a preamp by channel count and by whether you want a clean, transparent sound or added tube or analog colour.

Beginner

Someone adding their first outboard preamp can start with the Behringer MIC500USB tube preamp for a taste of analog warmth on a single channel. Set gain carefully by ear before recording, and compare the sound with your interface's built-in preamp to hear the difference.

Intermediate

An engineer recording bands or multiple sources benefits from the Audient ASP800 8-channel preamp for consistent, clean gain across several microphones at once. Learn to match preamp character to different sources, using cleaner channels for detail work and warmer ones for character.

Expert

A professional mixing engineer chasing a specific vintage tone often reaches for the Midas XL4-2 tube preamp or a Solid State Logic Super 9000 channel strip. At this level, build a reference library of how each preamp colours familiar sources, and maintain tube and analog gear with regular servicing to keep tone consistent.

About Studio Preamps

A studio preamp boosts a microphone's weak signal to a usable level before it reaches a recorder or interface, and often adds its own tonal character in the process. People buy a dedicated preamp when they want more channels, better sound quality, or a specific tone than a basic interface provides.

This page covers Audient's ASP and EVO preamps, Behringer's tube and standard preamps, Solid State Logic's PureDrive and Super 9000 channel strips, Klark Teknik's classic compressor and EQ, and the Midas XL4-2 tube preamp.
