How to choose

Pick a snare by shell material and depth, since both change how sharp or warm the crack sounds.

Beginner

A Dixon Classic Series or PDP Concept snare in a standard 14 inch size is an easy first choice. Set the tension evenly around the head when tuning, and store the snare in a bag or case when not on the stand to protect the shell.

Intermediate

Players adding a second snare often look at the Mapex Black Panther Versatus or PDP Concept Brushed Brass for a different tone next to their main kit. Try a few depths, since a deeper shell like a 6.5 inch snare sits lower and darker than a 5 inch.

Expert

Experienced players choosing the Ludwig Black Beauty or Mapex Black Panther Metallion are usually matching a snare to a specific recording or stage sound. Keep spare heads and snare wires on hand, and check the strainer and throw off regularly so the snare response stays consistent.

About Snare Drums

A snare drum is the sharp, cutting drum in the middle of a kit, and players often own more than one to swap in for different songs or rooms.

This page has snares in a range of shell materials and depths, from PDP Concept metal and wood snares to the Mapex Black Panther range and the classic Ludwig Black Beauty hammered snare.
