How to choose

Get the size right first, then the setup, then the upgrades. Everything else depends on a correctly sized, well set-up instrument.

Beginner

If you are buying a first violin, viola or cello, have the player measured for the correct size, since children usually need a fractional size such as 1/2 or 3/4. A Stentor or Gewa student outfit includes the instrument, a bow and a case. Ask us to check the bridge and string height, and buy rosin and a shoulder rest from the start.

Intermediate

If you are progressing, upgrade the strings and the bow before the instrument. Thomastik and Pirastro strings give a warmer, more refined tone than basic student strings. A better bow, such as a Sandner or A. Breton carbon fibre or Brazilwood bow, improves control and sound. When you do upgrade the instrument, a Sandner or Josef Teller model gives better wood and craftsmanship.

Expert

At an advanced level, choose the instrument by tone, projection and response, and try it in a room with good acoustics. Compare bows separately, since the right bow depends on your playing style. Experiment with string combinations, as advanced players often mix different strings for each position. Care matters too: good humidity control and a strong case protect a valuable instrument.

About our orchestral department

Orchestral string instruments come in sizes, and choosing the correct size is the first step for any player. A violin that is too big makes good technique almost impossible for a child. Beyond size, the setup matters: the bridge, the string height and the strings themselves decide how easy the instrument is to play.

The bow is often underestimated. A better bow can improve tone and control on the same instrument, which is why we keep a wide choice of bows at different levels.
