How to choose

Plan the whole kit before you buy. Shells, hardware, cymbals and heads all affect the sound, and the budget should cover all four.

Beginner

If you are starting out, a complete kit that includes stands, a pedal, a throne and cymbals is the simplest choice, and Dixon, PDP and Mapex all make good starter kits. For young children, a junior kit is sized so they can reach the pedals. If noise is a concern, consider an electronic kit or add mesh heads and quiet cymbals. Buy a good pair of Vater sticks and a practice pad, and set the throne height so your thighs are roughly level.

Intermediate

If you are upgrading, the most noticeable changes are often not the shells. New drumheads from Evans, Remo or Aquarian can transform an old kit, and it is worth learning to tune properly. Replacing cheap cymbals with Sabian or Meinl models makes a bigger difference to how the kit sounds in a room than almost anything else. When you do change the shells, a PDP, Tama or Mapex mid-range shell pack gives better wood, better bearing edges and more stable tuning, and Gibraltar hardware will hold it firmly.

Expert

At a professional level, choose shells by wood, size and sound. DW Performance Series and Gretsch Renown maple shells have a warm, full tone, while birch shells sound brighter and more focused. Match the drum sizes to your music: a smaller kick and toms suit jazz and small rooms, larger sizes suit rock and big stages. Choose cymbals by ear in the shop, playing them at the volume you perform at, and consider how they blend as a set. Heads, tuning and muffling finish the sound, so treat them as part of the instrument.

About our drum department

A drum kit is really several purchases that must work together: the shells, the hardware that holds everything, the cymbals and the heads. Many new drummers spend everything on the shells and then struggle with weak stands or harsh cymbals, which is why this department keeps all of those parts in one place.

The range goes from junior kits and complete beginner packages up to DW and Gretsch shell packs, with the cymbals, heads, sticks and hardware to finish any of them.
