How to choose

Choose a stage box that matches the digital console and channel count you are already running.

Beginner

If you are running a Behringer digital console, the Behringer S16 gives sixteen inputs and eight outputs in a straightforward stage box. Position it close to the stage inputs to keep analogue cable runs short, and secure the network cable so it cannot be pulled loose.

Intermediate

Venues running Allen and Heath consoles often pair the AB168 stage box with their Qu or SQ mixer for reliable digital transport. Check firmware compatibility between the stage box and console before a show, and keep a spare network cable in your kit.

Expert

Larger productions needing more channels use the Behringer S32 or Midas DL151 with its dual-redundant AES50 networking for extra reliability. Plan network cable runs carefully, test failover if the system supports it, and label every stage box input clearly for fast troubleshooting during a show.

About Digital Snakes/Stage Boxes

A digital stage box sits near the performers and sends multiple channels back to the mixing console over a single cable, replacing a bulky analogue snake. Sound engineers buy them to simplify stage wiring and to place preamps closer to the microphones.

This page covers the Behringer S16 and S32 for Behringer digital consoles, the Allen and Heath AB168 for Qu, Avantis and SQ systems, the Midas DL16 and DL151, and the Behringer Powerplay P16 personal mixing range.
