How to choose
Think about room treatment and source type when setting up the AT2020.
Beginner
A beginner setting up their first studio microphone can use the AT2020 on vocals with a pop filter and shock mount to reduce plosives and handling noise. Record in a quiet, treated space if possible since condenser mics pick up more room sound. Keep the mic in its pouch when not recording.
Intermediate
An intermediate user can use the AT2020 on acoustic guitar or vocals, experimenting with mic placement to shape the tone. Compare close and distant placement to hear how room sound changes the recording. Check phantom power settings are correct before each session.
Expert
An experienced engineer can use the AT2020 as a reliable secondary microphone alongside higher-end mics for layering or comparison. Its cardioid pattern makes it useful for controlled sources in busier studio sessions. Maintain the capsule and shock mount to keep the mic performing consistently over years of use.
