How to choose

Match the rosin to your instrument first, then choose a student or premium grade based on how often you play.

Beginner

A student should start with an affordable option like Hidersine Rosin Violin Junior or Sandner Rosin #5, applying a light, even coat across the bow hair before each session. Wipe rosin dust off the instrument body after playing to keep the varnish clean.

Intermediate

Regular players often try Pirastro Tonica Rosin for a balanced grip across most playing conditions on violin or viola. Test a new rosin over a few sessions before switching permanently, since it changes bow feel gradually.

Expert

Advanced players select specific grades like Pirastro Gold Rosin or Pirastro Oliv/Evah Rosin to match their strings and desired tone. Keep separate rosin cakes for different instruments if you play more than one, since residue can affect a differently strung instrument.

About Rosin

Rosin is applied to the bow hair so it grips the strings and produces sound, and different grades suit different instruments, climates and playing styles. Softer rosins tend to suit violin and viola while darker rosins suit cello and bass.

This page covers rosin from Pirastro, Hidersine and Sandner, spanning student grades like Hidersine Junior through to premium Pirastro Gold and Oliv/Evah rosin.
