How to choose
Start with a soprano recorder before moving to alto, tenor or bass for ensemble parts.
Beginner
A school-age beginner should start with the Yamaha YRS20BB or YRS302BII soprano recorder, both simple and durable for classroom use. Wash the mouthpiece regularly and let the recorder air dry between uses.
Intermediate
A player moving into ensemble playing should look at the Yamaha YRA322B or YRA28BIII alto recorder for the lower, richer parts common in group pieces. Practice switching between soprano and alto fingerings until the shift feels natural.
Expert
An experienced player covering a full consort part should add the Qi Mei Tenor or Bass Recorder alongside their soprano and alto instruments. Store each recorder in its own case and check joints for looseness that can affect tuning during longer performances.

About Recorders
Recorders are a common first wind instrument in schools because they are affordable and simple to get a sound from straight away. Players later move on to alto, tenor or bass recorders for ensemble playing.
This page is mostly Yamaha soprano and alto models like the YRS312BII and YRA28BIII, with Qi Mei covering tenor and bass sizes and the Aulos 303B offering a soprano alternative.
