How to choose

Whatever the instrument, choose the correct size and a reliable setup before you think about premium features.

Beginner

If you are buying a first instrument, focus on something that plays properly out of the box. For drums, a complete kit from Dixon, PDP or Mapex includes the hardware and cymbals you need. For piano, a digital piano with 88 weighted keys from Yamaha or Roland is ideal. For orchestral strings, the size must suit the player. For wind instruments, a Yamaha or Jupiter student model with a soft reed is a good start.

Intermediate

If you are progressing, upgrade the parts that affect your playing most. Drummers gain a lot from better heads and cymbals, pianists from a better key action, string players from better strings and a better bow, and wind players from a better mouthpiece and reed. Try the upgrade against your current instrument so you can hear and feel the difference.

Expert

At an advanced level, choose the instrument for the specific music and space you perform in. Compare shell woods and cymbal sets for drums, sound engines and speaker systems for digital pianos, tonewoods and setup for orchestral strings, and response and intonation for wind instruments. Take your time, play in the room, and bring your own accessories so the comparison is fair.
