How to choose
Match mouthpiece material and opening size to how much resistance and volume you want from your alto saxophone.
Beginner
A student just starting out often finds one of the Hard Rubber mouthpieces, such as the number 4 or 5, easier to control since a smaller opening needs less air support to get a steady tone. Ask a teacher to check your embouchure once you switch to a new mouthpiece.
Intermediate
A player developing tone and volume might move up to the Hard Rubber 6 or 7 for a more open feel that rewards a firmer embouchure and faster air. Spend time long toning on each reed strength to hear how the mouthpiece responds before settling on one.
Expert
An experienced saxophonist chasing a brighter, more cutting sound for lead alto work might prefer the metal AMR-6MM or AMR-7MM over the Hard Rubber range. Try each mouthpiece with your usual reed and ligature setup so you can judge the difference in projection fairly.
