How to choose

Decide first whether you need closed-back or open-back headphones. That single choice matters more than the brand.

Beginner

If you are buying your first pair for music, choose closed-back headphones. They keep sound in and noise out, so they work for practice, recording yourself and listening in a busy house. Behringer, Superlux and Roland make affordable closed-back models, and entry Sennheiser and AKG headphones give a clear, balanced sound. Make sure they are comfortable for an hour or more, and check the plug fits your device.

Intermediate

If you record or mix, it is worth moving to a dedicated studio model. Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser studio headphones give a detailed, reliable sound for long sessions, and Austrian Audio and Audio-Technica are strong alternatives. For mixing at home, open-back headphones give a more natural stereo image, but they leak sound, so they are not suitable for recording near a microphone. For live performance, KZ in-ear monitors are an affordable way to start using in-ears.

Expert

At a professional level, choose headphones as a reference tool and learn one pair deeply. High-impedance studio models, such as some Beyerdynamic headphones, sound their best with a proper headphone amplifier rather than a laptop output. For stage work, wired in-ear monitors pair well with IEM wireless systems, and a secure fit matters as much as the drivers. Compare pairs using music you know very well, at the volume you actually work at.

About our headphones

Headphones are built for different jobs, and the right pair depends on what you are doing. Studio headphones aim for an honest sound so you can hear problems in a mix. DJ headphones are built to be loud, rugged and easy to use with one ear. In-ear monitors seal out stage noise and let a performer hear themselves at a safe volume.

The department also covers the less obvious parts: headphone amplifiers that drive high-impedance headphones properly, replacement cables and protective cases.
