How to choose

Know which family of guitar suits your music before you compare brands. A great classical guitar is the wrong choice for rock, and the reverse is also true.

Beginner

If this is your first guitar, pick one that is easy to play and stays in tune. Fender Squier and Ibanez entry electrics are proven designs, and Cort acoustics give good value. Children may need a smaller size, so bring them along to try it. Ask us to check the setup so the strings sit low enough to press down comfortably, and budget for a tuner, a strap, spare strings and a gig bag. An electric guitar also needs a small amplifier, and one with a headphone output is ideal at home.

Intermediate

If you already play and want to move up, look at the parts you notice most while playing. Epiphone, Fender and Ibanez mid-range guitars improve the pickups, tuners and fretwork. A solid-top acoustic from Taylor or Cort sounds fuller than a laminated top and improves with age. For electric players, a BOSS pedal such as an overdrive or delay adds real range, and a better amplifier can transform a guitar you already own.

Expert

At a professional level, compare guitars by how they record and how they sit in a mix, not just how they sound alone. Gibson Les Paul models give a thick, sustained tone, Fender designs are brighter with more snap, and semi-hollow guitars add air and warmth. For acoustic players, a Taylor with onboard electronics needs to sound natural through a PA, so test it plugged in. Check neck stability, fret ends and intonation across the whole neck, and consider replacement pickups where a guitar feels right but sounds almost right.

About our guitar department

Most guitars fall into a small number of families. Solid-body electrics such as the Stratocaster and Les Paul designs, semi-hollow electrics, steel-string acoustics and nylon-string classical guitars each have their own sound and feel, and each suits different styles of music.

The department covers all of them, plus the amplifiers, pedals, pickups, strings and cases that complete a setup. That lets you compare a guitar and the amp it will be played through in one visit.
