How to choose
Decide early whether you want to practise on the kind of equipment you will find in clubs, or whether you want an all-in-one setup at home. That choice shapes everything else.
Beginner
If you are new to DJing, a two-channel controller is the best place to start. It gives you jog wheels, a mixer section and performance pads in one unit, and it runs the software you learn on. Controllers from Pioneer DJ, Numark and Denon DJ are good starting points. Make sure the controller works with the software you want to use, and budget for a pair of closed-back DJ headphones so you can cue tracks clearly in a loud room.
Intermediate
If you are playing gigs or want to move up, choose equipment that matches where you perform. If the venues you play use Pioneer DJ or AlphaTheta players, practising on a similar layout makes the move to club gear much easier. Four-channel controllers such as the Roland DJ-707M add inputs for microphones and external players, and a Denon DJ Prime unit can play without a laptop. Protect the investment with a Decksaver cover and a proper case.
Expert
For professional DJs, the standard is separate media players and a club mixer. Players such as the AlphaTheta CDJ-3000X give you stable playback from USB, detailed track information on screen and consistent jog wheel feel, and the mixer defines your effects and sound quality. Before buying, check how the equipment links over a network for shared libraries, and prepare your music with the matching library software. Plan the cases and transport at the same time, because this equipment travels a lot.

About our DJ department
DJ equipment falls into two groups. Controllers work with software on a laptop and put everything you need in one unit, which makes them the most practical way to learn. Standalone media players and separate mixers play music from USB drives without a computer, and they are the standard setup in most clubs.
Whichever you choose, the skills carry over. Beatmatching, EQ, phrasing and reading a crowd work the same way on a small controller and on club equipment.
