How to choose

Pick a size for volume and spread, then a series for tone character.

Beginner

A new drummer can start with a 16 inch SBR Crash Cymbal, since it is a manageable size and a practical entry point into the range. Set the crash at a slight angle on the stand and strike it with a glancing motion rather than straight on to avoid cracking it.

Intermediate

A drummer refining their kit can move to an 18 inch AAX or B8X crash for more volume and sustain, or try an O-Zone model for a faster, drier response. Match crash weight to your playing style, since lighter crashes respond faster to softer playing.

Expert

Experienced players often keep a 20 inch AAX Thin Crash for a broad, washy accent alongside smaller, faster crashes like the HHX Evolution for detail work. Inspect crashes regularly for hairline cracks near the bell, which is where damage typically starts on cymbals played hard.

About Sabian in Crashes

Crash cymbals mark accents and transitions in a drum part, and the sound varies with size, weight and series, from bright and cutting to darker and washier. Sabian's crash range spans budget SBR models through to detailed AAX and HHX cymbals.

This page covers 16 inch crashes in SBR, HHX Evolution, AAX O-Zone and XSR finishes, 18 inch AAX and B8X crashes including O-Zone and X-Plosion versions, and a 20 inch AAX Thin Crash for a larger, more open sound.
