How to choose
Choosing between the Hard Rubber and AMR ranges comes down to the resistance and brightness you want from your alto saxophone.
Beginner
Someone new to saxophone can start with a Hard Rubber mouthpiece in the 4 or 5 opening, since the smaller tip opening makes it easier to produce a consistent sound while the embouchure is still developing. Have a teacher listen in during your first few weeks with a new mouthpiece.
Intermediate
Once your tone and air support are steadier, trying the Hard Rubber 6 or 7 gives a bigger, more open sound that suits louder ensemble playing. Compare a few reed strengths on each mouthpiece to find the combination that feels most controlled.
Expert
Players after extra edge and projection for solo or lead alto parts often prefer the metal AMR-6MM or AMR-7MM mouthpieces over the Hard Rubber line. Test each option in the room or hall you usually play in, since projection can vary a lot with the space.
