How to choose
Roland covers several very different families of instrument, so the first question is which family you need, and only then how far up that family to go. The notes below are about choosing within the Roland range.
Beginner
If you are buying your first Roland, pick the model that is easiest to live with rather than the one with the longest feature list. For piano, the RP30 and the F107 give you weighted 88-note keys, built-in speakers and a fixed stand, so the instrument is ready to play and stays in one place. If you need to move it or you are short of space, the FP series is the portable version of the same idea. For drums, the TD-02KV and TD-07KV are the entry V-Drums kits, and they are quiet enough for a flat or a shared house. For keyboards, GO:KEYS 3 and GO:KEYS 5 are light, run on batteries and are built for learning songs quickly. Ask us to set the instrument up with you before you take it, so you know how to change sounds, use the headphone socket and adjust the touch sensitivity.
Intermediate
Once you can play a bit, the things worth paying for in a Roland are the keyboard action, the amount of control on the front panel, and the connections on the back. On piano, moving from RP30 or F107 up to RP701, F-701 or HP702 buys a better key action and a stronger speaker system, which is what you notice when you start playing with dynamics. The FP-E50 and FP-90X do the same for portable players, and the FP-90X adds proper stage outputs. On synths, the XPS-10X and JUNO-D7 give you real knobs and sliders rather than menus, which changes how quickly you can shape a sound while you play. On drums, the TD516 and TD-07DMK add mesh heads and a larger module, so the response under the stick is much closer to an acoustic kit. Test any of them with headphones and with the speakers on, because Roland voicings often sit differently through each.
Expert
At the top of the Roland range you are paying for the sound engine, the physical build and the routing. The LX-5, LX706 and the GP-6 and GP-9 grands use Roland's fullest piano engine with multi-channel speaker systems and cabinets built to move air, so listen to the sustain and to how the instrument behaves under the pedal rather than to the demo songs. For stage work, the RD-2000 EX, RD-88 EX and V-Stage88 are built around a hammer action with zone control and clean line outputs, which is what matters when you run into a house desk. On synthesizers, FANTOM 6, 7 and 8 EX and the Jupiter-X give you deep multi-timbral setups, sampling and control surfaces you can map to a live rig, while Gaia 2 and the AIRA Compact units suit a more hands-on writing workflow. On drums, the VAD series puts the module into a real shell kit, so check the trigger sensitivity and the hi-hat response, because that is where the VAD models differ most from each other.
