How to choose

Build your studio around the chain. A great microphone into a weak interface, or great monitors in an untreated room, will hold the whole system back.

Beginner

If you are starting a home studio, you need four things: an audio interface, a microphone, a pair of headphones or studio monitors, and recording software. A two-input interface from Focusrite or Arturia, a condenser microphone from Rode, and a pair of 5-inch monitors covers vocals, guitar and keyboards. Add a keyboard controller if you produce electronic music.

Intermediate

If you record regularly, upgrade the weakest link. Better monitors and some acoustic treatment help your mixes translate. A higher-quality interface with better preamps improves every recording. Synthesizers and controllers from Arturia, Novation and Korg expand your sound, and dedicated podcasting equipment simplifies recording speech for several people.

Expert

At a professional level, design the studio for sound quality and workflow. Outboard gear in the 500 Series format lets you build a custom chain of preamps and processors, and Solid State Logic and Cranborne Audio offer high-quality modules and chassis. Choose reference monitors that suit the room, and plan the routing so equipment is easy to reach. Consistency across sessions matters, so document your chain and settings.

About our studio and recording department

A recording setup is a chain from sound to finished track. A microphone or instrument feeds an audio interface, the computer records and mixes, and studio monitors let you hear the result accurately. Every studio, from a bedroom setup to a commercial facility, follows this path.

As a studio grows, specialised equipment adds character and control, such as 500 Series preamps, equalisers and compressors from Solid State Logic, Cranborne Audio and Harrison Audio.
