How to choose

Your room affects the sound as much as the monitors. Choose a size that suits the room, and plan some acoustic treatment.

Beginner

If you are setting up your first studio, a pair of 5-inch monitors suits most home rooms. KRK, PreSonus and M-Audio monitors are popular entry choices, and the Behringer Truth models are affordable. Place them at ear height, forming a triangle with your listening position, and keep them away from walls and corners. Use balanced cables from your audio interface.

Intermediate

If you mix regularly, move to monitors with more detail and better low end. Adam Audio, Focal and Yamaha monitors give a clearer picture of the mix. Consider 3-way designs, such as the Adam Audio A77H or A8H, for more accurate midrange. Add some acoustic treatment behind the monitors and at the first reflection points, since this improves accuracy more than a speaker upgrade.

Expert

At a professional level, choose monitors for accuracy, translation and consistency across rooms. Genelec and Neumann monitors offer room correction features that adapt to your space, and Barefoot Sound monitors are reference tools for detailed mixing. Match the monitor size to the room, measure the room response, and learn the monitors over time. Consider a centre channel and matching monitors for surround or immersive work.

About studio monitors

Studio monitors are designed to be honest. Hi-fi speakers often add bass and sparkle to make music sound exciting, but monitors aim to show you exactly what is in a recording so your mixes translate to other systems.

The size of the monitor and the size of your room should match. Small monitors suit small rooms and close listening, while larger monitors with bigger woofers need more space to deliver their low end accurately.
