How to choose

Match the microphone to what you are recording or amplifying. A vocal microphone, a kick drum microphone and a speech microphone are designed differently.

Beginner

If you need your first microphone for vocals or speech, a cardioid dynamic microphone from Shure, Sennheiser or Samson is the safe choice. It is durable, handles loud singing and resists feedback. Use a proper XLR cable and a stand with a clip. For recording at home, a USB microphone is simple, but an XLR microphone with an audio interface gives you more room to grow.

Intermediate

If you perform or record regularly, build a small collection for different jobs. Drum microphone sets from AKG, Lewitt and Behringer give matched microphones for the kit. Instrument microphones such as the Lewitt DTP 340 TT suit toms and guitar amps. Wireless systems from Shure, Sennheiser and Xvive free a singer or presenter to move, so check the operating frequency and battery life.

Expert

At a professional level, choose microphones by capsule character, off-axis rejection and consistency. Supercardioid vocal microphones such as the Lewitt MTP 840 DM help in loud stage environments. Dual-capsule kick drum microphones like the Lewitt DTP 640 REX capture both attack and depth. For wireless, plan frequencies carefully to avoid interference, and use antennas and distribution for multi-channel setups.

About our microphones

Microphones are chosen by the source and the environment. Dynamic microphones are tough, handle high volume and reject background noise well, which makes them the standard on stage. Condenser microphones are more sensitive and detailed, so they suit quiet sources and studio work.

The pickup pattern matters as much as the type. Cardioid and supercardioid microphones reject sound from behind, which helps prevent feedback from stage monitors.
