How to choose

Choose by feel first. Hold the guitar sitting and standing, play a few chords up and down the neck, and only then compare the sound.

Beginner

If you are buying your first guitar, decide between acoustic and electric by the music you want to play, since both are fine for learning. For electric, a Fender Squier or an Ibanez entry model with a small practice amp is a reliable start, and a BOSS or Fender practice amp with a headphone output lets you play quietly. For acoustic, Cort and entry Fender acoustics give you a solid instrument at a fair price. Make sure the strings are not too high above the frets, and add a tuner, a strap and a gig bag.

Intermediate

If you already play, upgrade the part that is holding you back. A better guitar from Epiphone, Fender or Ibanez gives you improved pickups, tuners that hold pitch and a more comfortable neck. A better amplifier often makes a bigger difference than a new guitar, and a few BOSS pedals open up new sounds. Try new strings as well: Elixir coated strings stay bright for longer, while Ernie Ball and DR Strings give a fresh, lively feel at a lower price.

Expert

At a professional level, focus on build quality, stability and how the instrument sits in a band. Gibson and Fender instruments differ in scale length, neck shape and pickup character, so play them through the same amplifier you use on stage. Seven and eight-string guitars from Ibanez Prestige and Cort suit extended-range styles. Check the fretwork, how well the neck holds its setup across seasons and the quality of the hardware, and choose your case with the same care as the guitar.

About our guitar and bass department

A guitar is the most personal purchase in most music shops. Two guitars with the same body shape and the same price can feel completely different in your hands, because the neck profile, the weight and the setup vary from model to model. That is why this department is built so you can compare instruments properly, and why we keep the strings, amps and pedals close by.

The range starts with affordable Squier and Cort instruments that are ready for a first lesson, and goes all the way to Gibson and Fender guitars and multi-string Ibanez models for experienced players.
