How to choose

Decide between a combo amp, a head and cabinet setup, or a portable practice amp before comparing models.

Beginner

A newer player usually starts with a combo amp such as the Boss Katana-50 or Cort CM15R, which is simple to use and covers clean to overdriven tones in one unit. Practice at low volumes at first, and keep the amp on a stable surface away from moisture.

Intermediate

Players wanting more tonal range often explore the wider Boss Katana series or an Orange combo, experimenting with onboard effects and channel switching. Try pairing a smaller head, like an Orange Dual or Gain Baby, with different cabinets to hear how cab size changes response.

Expert

Gigging musicians building a rig around a head and cab setup, such as a Marshall or Orange head with matching extension cabinets, should match wattage and impedance carefully between components. Keep valve amps serviced and allow proper warm-up time, since tube gear needs more care than solid-state options.
