How to choose

The first rule with cables is to use the right type for the job. Instrument, microphone and speaker cables can look similar but are not interchangeable.

Beginner

If you are new to this, match the cable to the connection. A guitar or bass needs an unbalanced instrument cable with 6.35mm jacks. A microphone needs a balanced XLR cable. A passive speaker needs a proper speaker cable, never an instrument cable, because the thin wire can overheat. Buy a cable a little longer than you think you need so it is not pulled tight, and choose one with a sturdy connector from a brand such as Fender or Ernie Ball.

Intermediate

If you play regularly, think about reliability and noise. Keep instrument cables as short as practical, since long unbalanced runs lose top end and pick up hum. Use a right-angled plug where a cable leaves a pedal or guitar at an awkward angle. On a pedalboard, good short patch cables from BOSS or Planet Waves save space and reduce failures. Carry a spare of every cable type you use at a gig, and label them.

Expert

For studios and live sound, plan the cabling as a system. Use balanced XLR or TRS connections wherever the equipment supports them, run power and signal cables apart and cross them at right angles, and use Speakon connectors for amplifiers and speakers because they lock in place. Adaptors are useful but each one is a weak point, so replace a chain of adaptors with the correct cable where you can. Test every cable before a show with a cable tester.

About cables and connectors

A cable is the part of a rig that people notice only when it fails. A bad connection causes crackles, hum or silence in the middle of a performance, and a cheap cable can also dull the sound of a guitar over a long run. Good cables have solid connectors, strong strain relief where the wire meets the plug, and proper shielding against noise.

The range covers everyday instrument cables, balanced XLR microphone leads, speaker cables for amplifiers and PA systems, short patch leads for pedalboards and a wide choice of adaptors.
