How to choose

With wind instruments, the setup matters as much as the instrument. A good student instrument with the wrong reed will feel harder than it should.

Beginner

If you are buying a first instrument, choose a reliable student model rather than the cheapest option. Yamaha and Jupiter student saxophones, clarinets, flutes and trumpets are made to consistent standards, which means the pads seal properly and the instrument responds when a beginner blows gently. Start saxophone and clarinet players on a soft reed, usually strength 2 or 2.5 from Vandoren, and buy a few at a time because reeds vary. Ask us to show you how to assemble, clean and store the instrument.

Intermediate

If you are progressing, the biggest improvement often comes from the mouthpiece and reed rather than a new instrument. Try a better mouthpiece and move up in reed strength slowly as your air support improves. Vandoren has several reed cuts with different characters, and Legere synthetic reeds are consistent and last much longer, which suits players who perform often. When you are ready to upgrade the instrument itself, Jupiter's higher models and Conn Selmer instruments give better intonation and a more even response across the range.

Expert

At a professional level, choose the instrument and mouthpiece together and play them in the same session. Professional saxophones such as the Jupiter JAS1150 and the Conn Selmer range differ in resistance, tone colour and key feel, so bring your own mouthpiece and play long tones and difficult passages rather than only a tune. Theo Wanne mouthpieces and BG ligatures let you fine-tune brightness and projection. Check the intonation with a tuner across the full range before you decide.

About our brass and woodwind department

Wind instruments are personal. The instrument, the mouthpiece and the reed or embouchure all work together, and a small change in one of them changes the sound and how easy the instrument is to play. That is why this department carries so many accessories alongside the instruments themselves.

The range suits school bands, beginners, serious students and working players, from student saxophones and trumpets to professional mouthpieces and synthetic reeds.
