How to choose
Alfred books are designed to be used in sequence, so the most useful thing you can do is pick the right series and the right level before you buy.
Beginner
If you are starting from zero, choose the series by age first. For a young child, Little Mozarts keeps each lesson short and playful. For a child who can already read, the Basic Piano Library Level 1A Lesson Book is the usual starting point, and it is worth buying the matching Theory Book at the same time so reading and playing grow together. Adults usually do best with the Basic Adult All-in-One Course Book 1, because it combines lesson, theory and technique in one book and avoids a pile of separate titles.
Intermediate
If you already play a little, do not restart at the first book just because it feels safe. Open the next book in your series and check whether the first few pieces are comfortable to read slowly. If they are, that is your level. Students moving through the Basic Piano Library should keep the Lesson, Theory and Recital books on the same level, because the pieces in each one assume the concepts taught in the others. Adults who finish Book 1 of the All-in-One course can move straight to Book 2 without buying anything extra.
Expert
If you are a teacher or an experienced player, the value of the Alfred range is consistency across many students. Keeping a small stock of the next level in each series saves a lesson lost to waiting for a book. The later Basic Adult books and the higher Basic Piano Library levels also work well as sight-reading material for stronger players, because the pieces are short, well graded and cover a wide range of styles.
