How to choose
With Vandoren, the reed strength and cut matter most. Start soft, move up slowly, and choose the cut that suits your style.
Beginner
If you are a beginner, start with a soft Vandoren reed, usually strength 2 or 2.5, so the instrument responds easily while your embouchure develops. Buy a small box rather than a single reed, since reeds vary. Keep them in a reed case, rotate between several, and wet them before playing.
Intermediate
If you are progressing, try a slightly harder reed as your air support improves, and experiment with different cuts. A classic Vandoren reed gives a warm, focused sound, while jazz cuts are brighter and more flexible. A better mouthpiece, such as an Optimum or a V5 model, and a good ligature like the Klassik can improve tone and response more than a new instrument.
Expert
At an advanced level, fine-tune your setup around the sound you want. Compare Black Diamond clarinet mouthpieces or the V5 Jazz saxophone mouthpieces with your preferred reed, and try the M|O and Optimum ligatures to adjust resistance and brightness.
