How to choose
Remo heads are chosen by ply and by sound. Single-ply heads are open and bright, two-ply heads are warmer and more durable.
Beginner
If you are replacing heads for the first time, an Ambassador Coated snare head and an Encore Pro Pack for your toms is an easy, good-sounding upgrade. Check your drum sizes before you buy. If you need to practise quietly, Silentstroke mesh heads reduce volume a lot.
Intermediate
If you want to shape your sound, try Emperor Clear toms for more attack and durability, or Pinstripe heads for a short, controlled sound that suits rock. On the bass drum, a Powerstroke P4 gives a punchy, focused kick. Learn to tune the resonant heads too, since they shape sustain.
Expert
At a professional level, choose Remo heads for each drum and each style. Coated Ambassadors suit jazz and brushes, while Emperor and Pinstripe heads suit louder music. Large drums such as a 26-inch bass drum benefit from Pinstripe or Encore Coated heads for control. Tune for the room and the microphones, and keep spare heads for recording and touring.

About Remo
Before synthetic heads, drums used calfskin, which reacted badly to changes in humidity. Remo's plastic heads made drums consistent and reliable, and today its designs are used on stages and in studios worldwide.
The main families are easy to understand. Ambassador heads are single-ply and open, Emperor heads are two-ply and fuller, Pinstripe heads have a short, punchy sound, and Powerstroke bass heads control boom. The Encore range offers good Remo sound at a lower price.
