How to choose

The first choice with a ukulele is the size. Soprano is small and classic, while tenor is fuller and more comfortable for larger hands.

Beginner

If you are buying a first ukulele, a Mahalo soprano from the Art or Kahiko Plus series is an easy, fun start, especially for children. Ask us to tune it and show you the basic chords. New nylon strings stretch for a few days, so tune often at first. A clip-on tuner is very helpful.

Intermediate

If you already play, consider a tenor ukulele such as the Mahalo MJ3 Java Series for a warmer sound and more room for chord shapes. Long-neck soprano models give a similar benefit in a smaller body. Try fresh ukulele strings, since they change the tone and tuning stability noticeably.

Expert

For performers, choose a Mahalo tenor ukulele with a pickup, such as the MJ3 with pickup, so you can plug into an amplifier or PA. Check the intonation up the neck and the quality of the pickup through a real system. Keep a gig bag for protection, and use a strap or a thumb strap for more control while standing.

About Mahalo

The ukulele is one of the friendliest instruments to learn. It has only four nylon strings, it is small and light, and simple chords come quickly, which makes it popular in schools and with adults picking up music for the first time.

Mahalo builds ukuleles with bright finishes and fun designs at prices that make it easy to start. The range includes soprano ukuleles, the smallest and most traditional size, and tenor ukuleles, which have a fuller sound and more space on the neck.
