How to choose
Legere reeds often feel slightly harder than cane of the same number, so many players choose a quarter strength softer.
Beginner
If you are trying Legere for the first time, choose a strength slightly softer than your usual cane reed, for example a 2.75 if you normally play a 3. Legere Classic reeds are a good start for clarinet. The reed plays immediately without soaking.
Intermediate
If you play regularly, compare the Signature and American Cut ranges for saxophone, since they have a different feel and tone. Legere reeds come in quarter strengths, such as 2.25 and 2.75, so you can fine-tune resistance. Rinse the reed after playing and store it in its case.
Expert
At a professional level, Legere reeds give consistent performance for concerts and recordings. Oboe and bassoon players can choose American or European scrape models. Keep a backup reed of the same strength, and match the reed cut to your mouthpiece and sound.
