How to choose
Gibson guitars differ a lot in body type. Solid, semi-hollow and hollow bodies each have a clear character, so choose the body type before the model.
Beginner
If you are buying your first Gibson, think about the music you play most. A Les Paul suits rock and blues and gives a warm, powerful tone, but it is a heavier guitar, so hold it standing up. An ES-335 style semi-hollow is lighter on the shoulder and more versatile for clean tones. Protect the guitar with a proper case and use Gibson strings and polish to keep it in good condition.
Intermediate
If you already own a guitar and want the Gibson sound, there are two routes. You can upgrade to a Gibson model with better hardware and finish, or you can install Gibson pickups in a guitar you already like. Try flatwound Gibson strings for a smoother, jazzier tone on a semi-hollow or hollow body.
Expert
At a professional level, Gibson's historic and custom models are about details. The Les Paul Custom R7 1957 and the ES-335 50s recreate specific eras in neck shape, pickups and construction. Compare neck profiles carefully, since 50s and 60s necks feel very different. Listen to the guitar unplugged as well as plugged in, check the fretwork and nut, and consider how the guitar's weight suits long gigs.
