How to choose

String gauge changes how a guitar feels and sounds. Lighter strings are easier to play, while heavier strings sound fuller and hold tuning better.

Beginner

If you are new to changing strings, choose a light or regular gauge that matches what came on your guitar. For acoustic guitar, Earthwood Phosphor Bronze Light 11-52 strings are a good choice. For electric, a Regular Slinky set suits most players. Change strings regularly, since old strings sound dull and do not stay in tune.

Intermediate

If you want to explore, try different materials and gauges. Everlast Coated acoustic strings last longer, and 80/20 Bronze strings sound brighter than phosphor bronze. Bass players can try Hybrid Slinky Flatwound strings for a smoother, rounder tone. Replace an old instrument cable with an Ernie Ball cable if you hear crackles.

Expert

At a professional level, choose strings for tone, feel and consistency across a set of guitars. Keep the same gauge on each guitar so your setups stay stable. Five-string bass players can use the Regular Slinky Flatwound 5-string set for a vintage sound. Use short Ernie Ball patch cables on the pedalboard, and change strings well before important gigs so they settle in.

About Ernie Ball

Ernie Ball changed guitar strings by offering lighter gauges that made bending notes much easier, and the Slinky sets became a standard. Today the range covers electric, acoustic, classical, bass and even banjo strings, each in several gauges and materials.

The brand also makes durable instrument cables, patch cables for pedalboards, straps and guitar maintenance products, so you can equip a whole rig with Ernie Ball.
