How to choose

Match the trombone type to the playing situation, since slide, trigger and valve models handle differently.

Beginner

A first trombone player usually starts on a straight tenor slide model such as the SL700L or SL700N, since these are the simplest to learn slide positions on without an extra trigger to manage. Practice slide positions slowly with a tuner, and keep the slide lightly oiled to move smoothly.

Intermediate

A player ready to extend their range can move to the JBSL820N trigger trombone, which adds the F attachment for lower notes without changing to a bigger horn. Spend time learning the trigger positions separately from standard slide positions before combining them in music.

Expert

A section player or soloist choosing among these models will use the SL830L bass trombone for low, weighty parts and the SL900L valve trombone where fast passages favour valves over a slide. Keep slide alignment and valve action serviced regularly, since both mechanisms need more careful upkeep at a performance level.
