How to choose

Pick a Legere reed by matching the strength number to what feels comfortable on your current cane reed.

Beginner

A beginner saxophonist can start near the lower end of the Alto Saxophone American Cut range, such as strength 1.5 or 1.75, to make tone production easier while building embouchure strength. Rinse the reed briefly before playing and let it air dry afterward rather than soaking it like cane.

Intermediate

An intermediate player can move up through the Alto Saxophone American Cut strengths toward 2.25 or 2.5, or try the Soprano Saxophone Signature Reed at 2.5 for a different cut. Test a few strengths in the same session to notice how response and tone change as you adjust.

Expert

An advanced player on oboe or bassoon can compare the LGOB-M American and European scrape oboe reeds, or use the LGBSN-M Bassoon Reed at medium for a dependable choice in performance. Rotate a small set of reeds by strength or scrape style, and wipe them clean after each use since synthetic reeds hold up over long-term play.
