How to choose
Choose the tip opening that matches your reed strength and how much air resistance you want.
Beginner
A newer player should start with a smaller tip opening such as the alto or tenor Tone Edge at 4, since it is easier to control and pairs well with a softer reed. Set it up with the ligature square and the reed tip level with the mouthpiece tip, and rinse it after each session to keep it clean.
Intermediate
Once your embouchure is steadier, the 7 tip opening on either the alto or tenor Tone Edge gives more volume and a bigger sound without becoming unmanageable. Experiment with reed strength around the mouthpiece to find the balance between resistance and tone before settling on one combination.
Expert
Experienced players often keep both tip openings on hand and switch between them depending on the room and the music, using the wider opening for more projection on tenor.
