How to choose

Choose a modulation pedal based on whether you want classic phaser or chorus tones or something more experimental like the Rainbow Machine.

Beginner

A player new to modulation should start with the Sea Machine V3 chorus, keeping the depth and rate controls modest to add subtle movement without overwhelming the tone. Place it after any drive pedals so the modulation sits on top of your core tone.

Intermediate

Players building out their tonal palette can try the Grand Orbiter V3 phaser for classic sweeping movement, or the Aurelius for a richer, multi-voice chorus sound. Experiment with placing modulation before or after delay pedals to hear how the combination changes.

Expert

Experienced players drawn to the Rainbow Machine V2 or Bit Commander should expect a steeper learning curve, since these pedals push into polyphonic and synth-like territory rather than standard chorus or phaser effects. Spend time exploring extreme settings, since these pedals are often built to reward players willing to move past conventional modulation sounds.
