How to choose

Count your inputs and your monitor mixes first. Those two numbers decide the size of mixer you need.

Beginner

If you are new to mixing, a small analogue mixer is the best way to learn. The Behringer Xenyx range and the Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 give you microphone inputs, simple EQ and effects, and many include USB so you can record. Choose a mixer with a few more inputs than you need today. Learn gain structure first: set each input gain properly before you touch the faders.

Intermediate

If you mix a band regularly, consider the number of monitor sends and the effects you need. The Allen & Heath ZED-16FX and ZED-22FX give more channels and built-in effects in an analogue format. A digital mixer from Behringer or Yamaha gives you compressors and gates on every channel, saved scenes for different bands and wireless control. Test how quickly you can find the controls you use most during a show.

Expert

For venues and touring engineers, choose a console by its workflow, its I/O and how well it expands. Midas and Allen & Heath digital consoles connect to stage boxes over a single cable, which saves a heavy analogue snake. Check the number of mix buses, the processing on every channel and compatibility with stage boxes and recording. Consider how easily a visiting engineer can use the desk, since that matters a lot in a busy venue.

About live mixing consoles

The mixer is the centre of a live sound system. Every microphone and instrument arrives at the mixer, where you balance their levels, shape their tone and send the result to the main speakers and the stage monitors.

Analogue mixers put every control on its own knob, which makes them quick to understand. Digital mixers pack far more processing into a smaller unit, and they let you save scenes and control the mix from a tablet while you walk around the room.
