How to choose

Choose a cornet for brass band work or a flugelhorn for a mellower jazz and solo tone.

Beginner

A student moving from trumpet should start with the Jupiter Bb Cornet JCR700 or Santa Fe Bb Cornet, since the fingering carries over directly. Practice slowly at first to adjust to the different tone response compared to trumpet.

Intermediate

A player wanting a warmer solo sound should try the Jinbao Bb Flugelhorn FH1100L or Santa Fe Bb Flugelhorn for jazz ballads or brass band solos. Spend time on long tones to get comfortable with the flugelhorn's wider bore.

Expert

An experienced brass band or jazz player should compare the Sonata Bb Cornet against the Mason AL-311N Cornet Nickel Plated for tone and finish differences in performance settings. Keep both cornet and flugelhorn serviced separately since their slides and valves wear at different rates depending on use.

About Cornet & Flugelhorn

Cornets and flugelhorns give a rounder, mellower tone than a trumpet, which makes them popular for brass band and jazz playing where warmth matters more than cutting projection. Both instruments use similar fingering to trumpet, easing the switch between them.

This page covers a small, focused range including the Sonata Bb Cornet, Mason AL-311N Cornet, Jupiter JCR700 Bb Cornet, and flugelhorns from Santa Fe and Jinbao.
