How to choose

Choose a bongo model based on the tone and finish you want, then add a bag if you plan to transport them.

Beginner

A beginner can start with a City Series wood bongo, which offers a straightforward introduction to traditional bongo technique and tone. Sit the larger drum, the hembra, on your right if right handed, and practice basic open and slap tones before moving to faster patterns.

Intermediate

A player who already knows the basics can compare the different Matador finishes, such as the Almond Brown or Whiskey Barrel options, to find a tone and look they prefer. Use the Aspire bongo bag when travelling to rehearsals to protect the heads from knocks.

Expert

An experienced percussionist can choose between the Matador Custom, Oak Wood or Original 1964 Mahogany for subtle tonal differences suited to specific styles of music. Check the head tension and tuning lugs regularly, since bongos need consistent tuning to deliver a clear, balanced tone across both drums.

About LP in Bongos

LP bongos are widely used in Latin percussion for their bright, resonant tone, built from different woods that shape the sound and look of each model. The Matador and Original 1964 lines are among the brand's most recognised bongo designs.

This page lists LP's wood bongo models in various finishes, along with a bag for carrying and protecting a pair of bongos.
