How to choose

A bass is chosen by feel and scale first, and by sound second. Try the neck before you look at the pickups.

Beginner

If you are starting out, look for a four-string bass with a standard long scale and a comfortable neck. A Fender Squier Precision or Jazz style bass, or a Cort or Ibanez entry model, gives you a proven design at a fair price. Make sure the strings are not too high above the frets, because a low action makes a big difference for a new player. Pair it with a small practice amplifier with a headphone output, and add a tuner and a strap before you leave.

Intermediate

If you already play, think about what your current bass cannot do. A five-string gives you a lower range for modern styles, active electronics give more tone shaping on the instrument, and a better set of pickups changes the character more than most upgrades. Try Fender, Ibanez and Warwick instruments side by side through the same amplifier. This is also the time to experiment with strings: roundwounds from DR Strings or D'Addario sound bright and punchy, while flatwounds give a smooth, vintage thump, and Elixir strings stay fresh for longer.

Expert

At a professional level, you are building a rig rather than buying a bass. Choose the amplifier and cabinet together, because the speaker size shapes the sound: a 2x10 cabinet is punchy and focused, and a 1x15 cabinet adds depth. Aguilar heads such as the AG500 and AG700 give clean headroom for large stages, and a lightweight SL cabinet is easier on the back without losing low end. On the instrument, pay attention to neck stability, fretwork and how evenly each string speaks across the whole fingerboard.

About our bass department

Bass players tend to be practical buyers. The instrument has to sit comfortably, stay in tune and give a strong, even note across the neck, and the amplifier has to deliver that note clearly at the volume of the band. This department is organised around that. Basses, amplification, strings and accessories sit together so you can build a setup that works as one system.

The range runs from affordable Squier and Cort basses to Warwick instruments and Aguilar heads and cabinets that are used on professional stages.
