How to choose

Choose by instrument size first, then decide how much bow performance you actually need.

Beginner

A newer player should match the AB-100 bow to the exact size of the instrument, whether that is 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4, since a bow that is too heavy or long is hard to control. Pair it with a chinrest and a mute for quiet practice, and have a teacher check the hair tension before the first few sessions.

Intermediate

Once bow control is more settled, the AB-116F carbon fibre bow holds up well to daily rehearsal and travel, resisting warping better than wood. Fit a VP-61 tailpiece with fine tuners if the current tailpiece only has one adjuster, since it makes retuning between pieces faster.

Expert

A serious player moving to the AB-119 Brazilwood bow will notice a difference in weight and balance against a carbon fibre stick, and it rewards a lighter bow arm. Keep spare fittings such as tailpieces and chinrests on hand for setup changes, and store the bow properly to protect the hair and camber between sessions.

About A. Breton

A. Breton makes bows and fittings for violin, viola and cello players who need reliable, well balanced gear at a fair standard. Students and teachers buy the brand because the sizing runs from small fractional instruments through to full size, so a whole studio can be fitted from one range.

This page holds bows in several sizes, tailpieces with fine tuners, chinrests, a practice mute and an end pin, covering most of what a string player needs beyond the instrument itself.
